CyberCiv: Reviving Ancient Civilizations

Imagine learning about Ancient Civilizations by becoming a virtual Egyptian. Or by building aqueducts in Ancient Rome. Nothing short of time travel can engage students like the opportunity to explore and create within virtual worlds.

The CyberCiv program connects students’ imaginations to the 6th grade social studies curriculum with virtual travel through Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Middle Ages. In this year long program, students develop increasingly complex technology skills, work on team projects, conduct research and contribute content to the worlds.

SciFair: Virtual Science Fair

Each Fall, Spring and Summer, teams of middle school students, teachers, college students and professionals from the local business community form teams to design and build a virtual world to educate others about a science topic. The program ends with a showcase celebrating the teams’ achievements at a local museum.

In the Southern Tier, we have teams from Addison, Bath, Campbell-Savona, Corning, Elmira,  Horseheads, Spencer-VanEtten and Watkins Glen. Our showcase is hosted by the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center. Corporate partners include Corning Inc., Tanglewood Nature Center and Dresser-Rand.

Exhibit & Resource Worlds

We host numerous exhibit and resource worlds that EDUni-NY community members may visit whenever they wish. These range from professionally constructed exploration worlds about a specific topic (e.g., genetics) to interactive math worlds, SciFair exhibit worlds (e.g., digestive system) and resource worlds for training and building practice. There is also an inworld Object Yard where you can visually “shop” for objects.

Other

Because its so easy to build in EDUni-NY, virtual worlds can be used to teach in any content area. In 2009-10, we have a year long technology project at Lincoln Orens Middle School in Island Park, a Art Club at Glen Cove Middle School, two science classrooms at Glen Cove High School, an Art students curating virtual exhibits of their own work at Spencer-VanEtten Middle School.
